Back to painting, got out today to paint at Parsons Marsh in Kennebunk. This is one of my favorite places to paint, it was pretty cold and damp, after all it's February in Maine. I often give myself an unplanned challenge when I set out to paint on location, today I forgot my Spectra Fix casein based fixative that I use to paint with my pastels. So I tried plain water, it worked pretty well, but took much longer to dry on this super damp day. This was not a great thing as I got really cold waiting for it to dry. Only lasted about two hours as it was getting dark and I was chilled to the bone! I usually finish on location, but I may spend a little more time on this one in the studio.

Saccarappa Falls, back to drawing

Back to drawing on my walks. We are having a very mild winter here in Maine and I've been very busy with projects. It's definitely time to get back to walking and drawing. Today was a very gray day and I took a walk to visit a new artist friend's studio in the Dana Warp Mill in Westbrook. Really enjoyed talking with her and her work. As painters, we are often so solitary in our studios, it's great to make connections and chat about all things art to share and learn new things. This is the view behind the Mill of the Presumpscot River and Saccarappa Falls. A fabulous building to have a studio! I finished the drawing and it started to mist and was about 35 degrees, so I finished the watercolor painting back in the studio after my walk.

Took a long walk on Goose Rocks Beach today, 52 degrees with a strong breeze on a Maine beach in January. We've had very little snow or cold weather this winter so far. Getting back to work after a holiday break, so starting up with some drawing, hope to get out to paint tomorrow. This is a nice little watercolor sketchbook by Canson 5.5" x 8.5" cold press with Pitt Pen.

Bradbury Mountain State Park

Hiked up Bradbury Mountain in Pownal, Maine and did a drawing at the summit. Beautiful ice crystals along the trail, some looked like Christmas ribbon candy. The sun is very low in the mid afternoon, but the light was beautiful. It was 35 degrees, a great day for being outdoors and in the woods. I just switched from Sharpies for my drawings to Pitt Pens after a recent discussion with other artists about fading with Sharpies. Pitt Pens are India ink and should be more permanent. I loved the way the Pitt ink flowed on the watercolor paper, even in the cold.

Today's drawing is from Oak Street looking toward High St. and the former location of the Portland YWCA. The YWCA is now torn down and the columned building is the former Portland School of Art (now Maine College of Art) main building. Maine College of Art has moved to the old Porteous department store on Congress Street. My senior painting studio was in the basement of this building, the two windows on the lower level. This was also the first year painting studio during my freshman year. Portland Museum of Art is to the right and rear of the former PSA building.

Stopped at the Franciscan Monastery in Kennebunk today for some drawing and a walk. A chilly 45 degrees. This is the outdoor grotto chapel. Just as I finished my drawing the lights around the Madonna came on.

The second drawing is from 11-16-11 as I was waiting in South Station for the Concord Coach to Portland. I did a very quick drawing after a long bus trip home from NYC!

Two drawings this morning at the Wyckoff Starr Coffee Shop in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Love the mix of residential and commercial spaces and lots of oddities all around. Had lunch at the fabulous Roberta's Pizza, went to visit an artist friend and scooted over to the Met to see the Stieglitz Collection show and a few Impressionists and Egyptian pieces. Walked down Fifth to Rockefeller Center to draw the skaters, but a light rain made that impossible. I continued walking downtown and saw a Pret a Manger directly across from Fox news, so time for a beverage and a draw.

Spent all day drawing in New York today, first at Battery Park, the view of the Statue of Liberty and then I changed location to the uptown view of the new World Trade Tower construction. My third drawing was of the view across the Hudson River to New Jersey. It was a gorgeous, warm, sunny day and I loved being by the water all day. I walked up though Wall Street in the late afternoon, and met my daughter and together we went to Occupy Wall Street. I did a quick drawing of the scene at Zuccotti Park.

A little late, but finished my bicycle wheel painting for the Community Bicycle Center's second silent auction fundraiser. The auction is at Run of the Mill restaurant in Saco, Maine on November 16th from 5-8pm. The painting is of the Eastern Trail in Scarborough, Maine through the marsh, on a very popular biking and walking section of the trail. Very fun to paint on a round format.

OK, so I decided to draw on my walk today and put my supplies in a small cross body pack. I found a spot that I liked on Cumberland Street with the new Sebago to the Sea Trail post as an easel and then found that I forgot my Ultra Fine Sharpie. I did have a heavy duty Sharpie on hand so I figured that I would try that and see what would happen. Pretty cold in the shade today with 20+ mph winds, 39 degrees with the wind chill.

So nice to go to the mailbox and find a check for a sale from a gallery! This acrylic on canvas was painted on my most recent trip to Katahdin Lake on a freezing cold, but sunny October day from the beach at the Wilderness Camps. I was painting with two gloves on each hand and six layers of clothes, including a down jacket. It had snowed the day before on Katahdin and there was still a tiny lip of snow on Hamlin. October Baxter State Park and Katahdin Lake Trip

Headed out to the Maine North Woods on the first of October in the pouring rain, the weather front stayed put for a few days and then blew out of Maine with 40 mph winds and cold Canadian air. It was a very challenging fall painting trip. I stayed for the first three days at the Big Moose Inn at Millinocket Lake. The weather was bad, so Innkeeper Laurie let me paint in the beautiful dining room of Big Moose. Spent the day working from a photo of a sunrise on Katahdin Lake from my second trip to the Lake in October of 2006, a cold, clear, mirror image sunrise. After painting,
I was itching to get outdoors so I took a hike into Sandy Stream Pond in Baxter Park just at sunset in the rain. The next day was more of the same, I took a drive up to Ripogenus Lake and every time that I stopped at a great painting location the rain started, so I went in to Millinocket to buy food for my stay at Katahdin Lake Wilderness Camps, just breakfast and lunch, I would have supper at the main lodge with Rachel and Holly's great cooking and sharing the table with other visitors. Stopped at North Light Gallery to paint for the rest of the afternoon, the Alton Bog at sunset from memory. North Light Gallery represents all of my Katahdin area work and I paint in the gallery when the weather is not too good on my trips North. I was supposed to fly in to KLWC the next morning on Katahdin Air Service, but the weather didn't allow any flying in to the Lake all day, another day spent painting at the gallery. Three days, three paintings, all indoors! On the fifth day I was able to fly into the Lake, last flight in as the winds were wild. I did some drawing in my cabin and the wind was peeling the bark from the birch tree outside the window! The next day I spent an hour drawing on the beach, 33 degrees and 30-40mph winds, froze with six layers on! The seventh day was spent painting on the beach, a fine lip of snow on Hamlin that melted in the bright sunlight. I started a painting of the Island in my cabin that night by gas lamp and flashlight, and finished it the next morning as warm weather settled in and I flew back out to civilization. Met lots of interesting people from Massachusetts, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Washington, Wisconsin, Michigan and Maine! Baxter attracts people from all over the world for her natural wonders and living close to nature.

Scarborough Marsh 54

I did a large pastel at the Scarborough Marsh this morning, perfect painting conditions. The fall colors on the marsh were just coming out and the high tide was incredible. The paper is Wallis dry mounted to acid free foam core and the under painting is pastel washed with Spectrafix casein based fixative. I use the fixative on a large brush throughout the painting to blend and wash various areas. I have lots of different pastels, from 1970's Grumbacher to Terry Ludwigs. Just when I finished and was packing up, a gust of wind came up and blew my easel into the bridge of my nose, had a purple bruise and saw stars. Plein air painters suffer many injuries at work!

September 18, 2011. Yesterday's painting from the Golden Road, a whole day project 18" x 36". This is the largest size that I paint plein air, it's a challenge to do in one day. The marsh was beautiful just changing color from late summer to early fall, still plenty of green and millions of white flowers in the distance, no Moose sightings this trip. September 17, 2011. Painted at North Light Gallery in Millinocket for the Trails End Festival on Saturday. This is the view of downtown and the second year that I have painted this view at Trails End. Five artists painted all around the gallery and Maine's own King of the Blues, Mark Miller played and sang on the gallery steps joined in song by gallery owner and painter Marsha Donahue. It was quite a celebration of the arts! We all had a wonderful time. I did several small sketches of Mark as he was playing and Marsha did one too!

September 16, 2011. I was lucky to be one of 13 artists taking part in a paint out on land in or near the proposed North Woods National Park. We were transported to the location by van, some of the group painted at Lunksoos Camps and I was with a group that hiked out through the woods to Wassataquoik Stream fording streams and new trail carrying heavy painting gear to this beautiful spot. The work that we created on this trip is on display at North Light Gallery in Millinocket, Maine.

The first one in the studio and the second at Mother's beach today. Today was a perfect day not too warm with a breeze, Mother's Beach was pretty quite now that school has started and at high tide. The Port was pretty busy with lots of tourists squeezing in the last of the tourist season. Who can help but feel like a tourist in Kennebunkport? Three paintings today, I am tired!!! No looming deadlines now, time to enjoy a little summer myself!

I have driven by the Turbat's Creek Road dozens and dozens of times and never explored this popular painting place. Painted another 10 x 10 for "Paint the Bunk" today looking at Kennebunk Beach from Colony Beach. It was super windy and threatening rain, but I managed to finish before the deluge started. I was very aware of the effect of the singular brush stroke and it's drama today. Sometimes it's magic and sometimes it's just wrong, the tension of the decision making is exciting.

Monhegan 4 & 5

Last day on Monhegan! Started the fog painting yesterday on the porch of the Monhegan House and painted in the rain until it started to blow sideways under the umbrella. Finished it this morning in the bright sunshine. Then pivoted my easel and painted the lighthouse view behind the Hotel. I was told by another Hotel guest that Van Gogh painted that way too. Sold it from the easel to a lovely couple from San Francisco, they watched me paint it from beginning to end. I enjoy talking with people when I paint plein air. Sold "Monhegan 1" painted from Fish Beach on my first day to their friends and traveling companions also from San Francisco. Met and talked with so many nice people on Monhegan! The Monhegan House is a wonderful place to stay, very comfortable, great food and service. Looking forward to my next visit!

First day of painting on Monhegan. Painted from Fish Beach most of the day and then hiked out to Gull Rock and Burnt Head. My first time to Monhegan, left New Harbor in dense fog and as the ferry approached Monhegan the fog lightened, just hanging over the island and blue sky appeared. It turned out to be a very hot and sunny day with very calm sea.

Painted at the Weber's garden in Southwest today, in the shade right at the seaside. Met and chatted with lots of nice people on the garden tour and enjoyed the fabulous garden. Did two paintings, even with all the talking and demos. Stopped at Seawall after the event, several degrees cooler and rested and did 2 watercolor postcards, now off to Mainely-Delights for an excellent Lobster Roll and sunset at Bass Harbor!

Painted like a demon today to try to reach my goal of 5 paintings, only did 3! It was still very hot, low 90's and this Maine girl just can't take it. Spent a lot of time exploring, drove about 75 miles around Mount Desert Island checking out painting spots. Had a root beer float at Beals in Southwest Harbor and lunch and suppah picnics of peanut butter sandwiches. Got very emotional when I remembered certain spots where my dad took us camping as kids on his vacation.

This is the first painting of the day at last Sunday's Cape Elizabeth's Paint for Preservation. It was 91 degrees and very hot, but of course today's triple digit temps make that look like a cool day. This is the view of Casco Bay from Casino Beach, painted until the incoming tide turned me away. I put my second painting, a pastel done from the other side of the beach, in the auction and that one sold. We were only allowed to enter one painting, if anyone is interested in this one at regular Gallery retail price, 50% of price donation can be made to the Land Trust. Painted for the Cape Elizabeth Land Trust Paint for Preservation wet paint auction today. I was assigned maiden cove for my painting location, it was a very warm day for painting in Maine, 91 degrees, even right on the water. I started out with a 24 x 24 acrylic on canvas at 9:30 am and then changed location at about high tide at 1:15 pm and did a second painting, a pastel on paper. It was HOT!!! finished at 2:55. As we could only enter one painting in the auction, I really wasn't sure which one to enter. A quick poll of the artists and others at the drop off resulted in a tie...in the end I picked the pastel as there was only one other pastel in the auction, a beauty by Wade Zahares of Portland Head Light. I was very happy that the pastel sold as did all the paintings by the 30 artists juried into this event. A great turnout for the event, and fantastic job by all! It was great to see such support for CELT! The nicest people live on Maiden Cove, many offers of cold drinks, bathrooms(very important to plein air painters!) and parking, thank you all!

Painted for "Paint the Port" plein air day for tonight's auction to benefit Heartwood College of Art. It was a very warm 85 degrees in the sun on Ocean Ave. with little breeze. This is very challenging weather for plein air painting in arylics. A super nice women gave me a couple of delicious S'mores bars as I was painting. I shared with Chris Stavros who has painted at this location for years, he is 89 years old and still actively painting plein air! A great inspiration. Artist friend Cheryl Dahn and her husband Scott came by too, she had finished her painting. Thanks to Scott for taking this photo!

First thing this morning painted the view in acrylic from Moore's Specialties B & B, beautiful hay field and old barns with the so New Brunswick spiky tree line. After lunch I went down to the beach and started a pastel, rain was certain to fall soon. I was able to finish even though I had to half pack up once for some light rain. Used lots of SpectraFix on this one! Then I went to paint on Duck Pond Road, but as soon as I starting setting up the rain came, so I went to dinner and there was a thunder storm. I painted a couple of watercolor postcards while enjoying the view of The Caves in St Martins from the porch and a nice meal.

Had a great painting day today! I started at the beach at Gardner Creek and did two paintings in different locations. The biting flies were very pesky today, this beach is right near a marsh. Then I went on to dinner at The Caves and then did another painting. The sun sets very late in New Brunswick in June. The bugs were very bad on the beach at The Caves too, oh well!

Harris Point, Eastport 2

Today was beautiful in Eastport! I painted at Harris Point again today and it was sheltered from the cool wind downtown, it was a very warm 81 degrees. I finished my second painting for the Bay of Fundy Plein Air Painters show at the Next Door Gallery in Eastport opening Friday night. A very peaceful place to paint. The ferry to Deer island comes and goes by here, looking out at Deer island. Lots of sea birds and the clanging of the dock as the tide went out. Dropped off my work at the gallery and then headed out to New Brunswick, 20 degrees cooler in St John and a finger of purple fog had settled on the city in bright sunshine, a mystical sight!

Painted at Heartwood College of Art in Kennebunk today while gallery sitting for the Pastel Painters of Maine 12th International Juried Exhibition. The first pastel of the day was from a photo of Millinocket Lake that I took while we were on a Moose Cruise a couple of years ago, Katahdin completely hidden by the clouds.

Ninety degree day here in Maine, went to paint at Wolfe's Neck again this afternoon. It was a little cooler right by the coast and I planted myself right in the shade of a big tree to paint. Didn't quite finish as the approaching thunder storm ended my painting time, the storm hit hard just as I drove into downtown Freeport for some LL Bean time!

Pemaquid Day

Had a great day of painting at Pemaquid! Beautiful clear sunshine and cool, mixed it up with pastels and acrylic painting today. Started the morning painting in acrylic at 7am with friends at Kresge's Point. Then our painting retreat had a demo by Bangor, Maine artist Linda Packard. Had blueberry pie for a late breakfast and then did a couple of paintings at the lighthouse park. A lovely wedding happened at the lighthouse today, what a great place for a wedding! Then I went to the boat launch at Pemaquid Harbor to start the fourth painting of the day, didn't quite finish that one as there were lots of boats, but will in the studio. We had a group critique by Diana Johnson, PSA and then all went to dinner at Shaw's on the water in New Harbor. More Pemaquid painting tomorrow!

At the Pastel Painters of Maine annual Pemaquid Painting Retreat. Arrived late this afternoon, didn't get a chance to paint before the group critique, Linda Packard did a fabulous job discussing the work done today. We all had a great dinner at the Sea Gull restaurant right on Pemaquid Point watching the ever changing light on the water and a clear view to Monhegan with the sun beaming on the island. Then went out to paint at 7pm with the bugs and finished at 8:15. Looking forward to some very early morning painting tomorrow, a very rare thing for me to do!

Started this 6 x 18 at the Maine Yacht Center yesterday, but the cold wind drove me away after a couple of hours. Couldn't even hold my brush still as the wind was wild. When I set out to paint I thought I was overdressed as the sun was out and it was warm, how quickly Maine weather can change right near the shore. Had to wear my Marmot quilted vest over an extra thick flannel shirt and my super fingerless Cabela's fishing gloves. Will be finishing this one in the studio today where the climate is fair.

I painted "Goose Cove 1" last summer at the end of a long painting trip to New Brunswick and a short stay in Bass Harbor on the way home. It was very hot that day and this little painting took a long time, but I just love the yellow boat.

Holiday Commission 2

Another Holiday commission that I had been working on for awhile. It is a copy of a Don Ozier painting after Bill Paxton. My copy is above and the original below. The original is an oil and my copy an acrylic, I tried to do the copy true to the original with some of my own style. I recently met Don Ozier through an artist friend and he is delightful. It was a difficult painting as the original used black and I never do, Bill Creevy advised me that I probably would have to explore using black for this project. I did.

March Marathon Day 3

Started a March Painting Marathon with 12 Facebook artist friends. My goal for the month is to get back to daily painting after a long winter break. This is a pastel that I did at Kettle Cove recently at sunset and had to stop at darkness before it was completed. Finished it in the studio as it was too cold to head out to paint today. I also took 9 pastels to the photographer to be shot today, I think it's really important to have great professionally shot digital images of my work ready for my website, press releases, show entries, etc. Thank you for following my blog, I hope that you will share it with friends! It was warm enough to paint on the sunporch with just a space heater even at 16 degrees. Getting closer to spring!

Decided last minute to head out to Kettle Cove again to paint when the rain stopped and the sun was out for sure at about 3:30. It was around 50 degrees! Started to paint at 4:19 and finished at 5:36 when the sun was definitely down, almost needed my headlamp to pack up. Got a little chilly about 40. Still beautiful weather for February in Maine!

Today was the warmest of the year so far, 50 degrees in Portland. Went out to paint at Kettle Cove in Cape Elizabeth when it hit 42, it's been a very cold February...the snow and ice were melting and I could paint without a parka in a down vest right on the water. Then I took a long walk through the park and on Crescent Beach.

SOLD, this little painting of Katahdin Lake with a cloud over the mountain. Many of my adventures to the Wilderness Camps on the Lake have been rainy and cloudy, I always try to make the best of it and paint when I can and take lots of photos.
